Just like your computer, your phone's software needs to be updated periodically to make sure you have all the latest fixes and enhancements to keep it running at optimal performance. Follow the steps below to check your current version and perform any needed updates.

Check the version on your phone
To find the software version on your BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 smartphone:

Press the Menu key and select Open Tray to get to the main menu

Scroll to the Options icon and press the trackpad

Click on Device
-
Click on About Device Versions to see the current software version
Update your software
To update your BlackBerry Bold 9650 over the air:
-
Press the Menu key and choose Open Tray to get to the main menu
-
Scroll to the Options icon and press the trackpad
-
Choose Device
-
Click on Software Updates
-
Select Check for Upgrades
-
Choose the software update package that is available and click Next
-
Click Start Download
-
To begin the update, choose Upgrade Now; if you want to schedule a time
to install the update, click Schedule Upgrade

Click Upgrade Now again and the update will download and install
Note: You will be unable to use your phone or make emergency calls for up to 2 hours during the installation process.
To update your BlackBerry Bold 9650 through your computer:

Go to our
Bold 9650 download site to get the download file

Find the software version you need and click More Details
-
Scroll to the bottom and select Download
-
A pop-up box will ask you to either Run or Save the download;
choose Save and save to your computer desktop
-
Once the download is saved, double-click the file that was saved to your
desktop and when the dialog box appears, click Run
-
Select the appropriate language and click OK
-
Click Next and select the appropriate Country or Region
-
Click Next and select I accept the terms in the license agreement
-
Click Next and the installation process will begin
-
Click Finish
-
Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager by going to Start > Programs >
BlackBerry > Desktop Manager
-
Once the Desktop Manager is open, connect your BlackBerry Bold 9650 to
your computer using the USB cable and make sure the Desktop Manager
shows Connected in the top left

If the Application Updates Available window appears, click Update Now
and select the check box for BlackBerry Device Software

Click Next
-
On the Device Backup screen, choose whether to automatically back up
the data on your BlackBerry 9650 or to Not back up the data
-
Note: It is recommended that you back up your data before proceeding

Click Next
-
Click Finish to begin loading the BlackBerry Desktop Software to your
Bold 9650
-
Important Note: Do not unplug the phone while the update is loading

Click Close when the software is finished loading
