Find and update the software version on your BlackBerry Torch 9850

Just like your computer, your phone's software needs to be updated periodically to make sure you have all the latest fixes and enhancements to keep it running at optimal performance. Follow the steps below to check your current version and perform any needed updates.

Important Note: If you have a corporate BlackBerry, please check with your company IT support for the best method to upgrade your software.

Check the version on your phone

To find the software version on your BlackBerry Torch 9850:

  1. Press Application button and choose Maximize Panel to get to Main Menu.
  2. Scroll to Options.
  3. Choose Device.
  4. Click About Device Versions.
  5. You will see BlackBerry Torch 9850 Smartphone (3G, CDMA) and then the version number.

Update your software

To update your BlackBerry Torch 9850 over the air:

  1. Press Application button and choose Maximize Panel to get to Main Menu.
  2. Scroll to Options.
  3. Choose Device.
  4. Click on Software Updates.
  5. Select 7.1 wireless BlackBerry Device Software upgrade package.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Start Download.
  8. To begin the update, choose Upgrade Now; if you want to schedule a time to install the update, click Schedule Upgrade.
  9. Click Upgrade Now again and the update will download and install.

Note: You will be unable to use your phone or make emergency calls for up to 2 hours during the installation process.

To update your BlackBerry Torch 9850 through your computer:

  1. Go to www.sprint.com/downloads and select Smartphones > BlackBerry Torch 9850 > Software Update for BlackBerry Bold 9930 > More Details.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and select Download.
  3. A pop-up box will ask you to either Run or Save the download; choose Save and save to your computer desktop.
  4. Once the download is saved, double-click the file that was saved to your desktop and when the dialog box appears, click Run.
  5. Select the appropriate language and click OK.
  6. Click Next and select the appropriate Country or Region.
  7. Click Next and select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
  8. Click Next and the installation process will begin.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager by going to Start > Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.
  11. Once the Desktop Manager is open, connect your BlackBerry Torch 9850 to your computer using the USB cable and make sure the Desktop Manager shows Connected in the top left.
  12. If the Application Updates Available window appears, click Update Now and select the check box for BlackBerry Device Software 7.1.
  13. Click Next.
  14. On the Device Backup screen, choose whether to automatically back up the data on your BlackBerry Torch 9850 or to Not back up the data.
    • Note: It is recommended that you back up your data before proceeding
  15. Click Next.
  16. Click Finish to begin loading the BlackBerry Desktop Software to your Torch 9850.
    • Note: Do not unplug the phone while the update is loading.
  17. Click Close when the software is finished loading.
