Frequently asked questions about data roaming

Last updated: Sep 26, 2009

What is roaming?

Roaming means you are using your wireless Sprint service when you're not connected to the Sprint network. Roaming service is offered as a convenience so you can make and receive calls and/or gain access to data networks in situations when you are temporarily outside the Nationwide Sprint Network. It is not Sprint's intention to have roaming be the primary source of your network coverage.

How do I know what areas are covered by the Sprint Network?

Detailed coverage maps are available at www.sprint.com/coverage or kiosks in many Sprint Retail Stores. Click on the Data, Email and Multimedia option for Sprint Mobile Broadband Network coverage. With these tools you can see neighborhood signal-strength as well as street level coverage.

What are the terms & conditions related to roaming and data use for Connection and Phone as Modem Plans?

Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred; and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if usage either exceeds (a) 5 GB per month in total or (b) 300 MB per month while off-network roaming.

Where can Sprint's terms & conditions for services be found?

Sprint provides terms and conditions in our Service Plans Guide which is a comprehensive brochure available in all Sprint Stores. In addition, you can view terms and conditions online here. You also can contact Sprint Customer Care at 1-866-957-4161 if you have questions.

Do international roaming plans or extended domestic locations like Puerto Rico also fall into the definition of "off-network roaming?"

The 300 MB roaming use limitation does apply to the North America Plus Connection Plan, which includes Canada and Mexico in the bucket of included usage. In addition, all customers on domestic rate plans traveling to international locations, like Puerto Rico, and engaging in continued data use, will be considered roaming off-network.

Can you quantify 300 MB and 5 GB of data?

Either limit represents a lot of data – hundreds or thousands of emails, photos or audio-visual files. The number of files that can be downloaded within the limit varies widely according to the size of the file. In addition, the size of email messages varies, especially if they contain graphics or attachments. For example, an email message can be as small as a few kilobytes which means a user could send or receive more than a million messages of this type or 100 messages while roaming and still stay under the 5GB limit.

The chart below is designed to give you a general idea of the size of certain data applications.

How do I know when I'm roaming while using my mobile broadband card, USB modem or embedded modem?

Mobile broadband cards, USB modems and embedded modems include a visual indicator of roaming status. Please consult your card's or modem's operating instructions for details.

What can I do to prevent roaming?

To prevent roaming, you can change the setting on your mobile broadband card or modem to Sprint which forces your device to search only for the Nationwide Sprint Network. Directions for setting roaming preferences are in your device's user guide, or you can go to www.sprint.com to view your user guide online.

Why did Sprint contact me regarding my Mobile Broadband Data Usage?

From time to time, we contact users who may be frequently roaming or using a lot of data to educate them on what roaming is and how to recognize when roaming is occurring.

Who can I call if I have additional questions or need assistance?

Call Sprint Customer Care at 1-866-957-4161.
