Program your Sierra Wireless Compass 597

Complete the steps below to program and activate the Sprint Mobile Broadband USB Modem by Sierra Wireless Compass 597.

Note: Providing that the data plan subscription and ESN have been established in the Sprint billing system, you can simply install the software and click Yes when prompted to activate.

To install and run the Sprint Mobile Broadband USB modem and accompanying software, your system requires the following:

  • Windows® XP or Vista
  • Macintosh®OSX10.4.11 or higher
  • Linux

Go to Sprint.com/downloads > Linux for Novatel/Linux setup instruction

  • CPU 300 MHz or faster (800 MHz for Windows Vista)
  • Interface: USB port

Install and Activate (Windows)

Necessary software and drivers are automatically installed upon inserting the device into the computer. Providing the Subscription/MDN and ESN have been set up in the billing system, you only need to click Yes at the activation prompt to complete the activation process.

Note: Installation/activation may require you to be logged in with administrative privileges.

  1. Obtain the ESN, usually printed on the underside of the device.
    • Input the ESN into your Activation screen.
    • Verify the ESN/MEID by reading the ESN/MEID and Mobile Broadband Device model from your Device Programming Information Screen.
    • If your ESN/MEID does not match the inputted ESN/MEID, go back to Step 1.
  2. Connect the USB modem to the computer's USB port. Windows will detect the device and automatically install the necessary device drivers as well as Sprint SmartView connection software.
  3. The LED indicator is lit (blue, or blinking amber).
  4. If the Software Installation Wizard has not started automatically, in Windows Explorer browse to the TRU-Install entry (under My Computer) and run AppLaunch.exe or, if you're running Windows Vista, in the AutoPlay window click Sprint SmartView Installation to start the Wizard.
  5. Follow the prompts and accept the terms of the License Agreement to install and after the installation shield is complete click finish.
  6. Wait to proceed until the system tray displays Your devices are ready to use or Your new hardware is installed and ready to use.
  7. The Sprint SmartView icon appears on your desktop. Double-click to open the Sprint SmartView icon on the desktop
  8. Automatic Activation launches and a window appears explaining that the device is not currently activated. Click Yes to activate or No to cancel. NOTE: If you have not activated the device, the activation window appears and you will be prompted to activate your device the next time you attempt to connect to Sprint Mobile Broadband.
  9. After selecting Yes, wait a few moments. During this time, Sprint SmartView may display the messages Preparing Services… followed by, Please wait.
  10. Once the activation process completes, Ready: Sprint Mobile Broadband displays, Connect, the default Ready-to-Connect state.
  11. Programming Complete. Explain provisioning expectations. After provisioning is complete, the connection card should be ready for use by clicking Connect.

Manual Programming

If One-Touch Activation is unsuccessful, have the user open Sprint SmartView and ensure that it is at the forefront by clicking on it.

  1. Type ##ATV# on the keyboard. (You will not see the ##ATV# characters as they are being keyed in.)
  2. The Activation Wizard appears. Click Next.
  3. Enter your secondary 6-digit code into the Activation Code field and click Next.
  4. Enter Phone Number (MDN) into Phone number (MDN) field.
  5. Enter MSID into MSID (IMSI_I) field.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Reconfirm the Phone Number (MDN) and MSID and then click Yes.
  8. Provisioning (OMA) will begin. After provisioning is complete, the connection card should be ready for use by clicking Connect.
