Troubleshoot charging issues on your Samsung Galaxy S III

This article helps troubleshoot charging issues on your Samsung Galaxy S III.

You may have charging issues if your Samsung Galaxy S III®:

  • Doesn't charge
  • Charges slowly

Try each of these steps if your phone has charging issues.

  1. Verify that your phone, charging port, and battery contacts are not damaged.

    1. Carefully inspect your phone to be sure it's not overheating, swollen or damaged.
    2. Carefully inspect your phone's charging port and remove any debris.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Carefully inspect and clean the gold contacts using a cotton swab or dry soft cloth.

    Caution: If your phone is damaged, dial *2 on your phone or dial 855-639-4644 to reach Sprint Prepaid Customer Care.

  2. Verify that your Samsung Galaxy S III can power on.

    1. Turn your phone on.
      • If your Samsung Galaxy S III does not turn on, dial *2 on your phone or dial 855-639-4644 to reach Sprint Prepaid Customer Care.
  3. Verify that your charger is working.

    Note: You risk severe damage to your phone if the charger isn't the same voltage, amps, and plug type as your original charger. You can purchase compatible chargers on sprint.com.

    1. Connect your phone to your charger.
    2. From the home screen, tap Apps.
    3. Scroll to and tap Sprint Zone.
    4. Tap My Device.
    5. Tap Dashboard.
    6. Tap Battery Status.
    7. Verify that the Battery Status is Charging.
  4. Verify that your Samsung Galaxy S III is running the most recent software.

    1. Tap the System Updates dashboard.
    2. Tap Device Software.
    3. Tap Check now.
      • If an update is available, follow the prompts to install.
  5. Safely remove your SD card.

    1. From the home screen, tap the Menu key.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap the More tab.
    4. Tap Storage.
    5. Scroll to and tap Unmount SD card.
    6. Tap OK.
    7. Remove the SD card.
  6. Perform a soft reset.

    A soft reset restarts your phone and does not erase any of your content or data.

    1. Turn your phone off.
    2. Remove the battery. After 10 seconds, reinsert the battery.
    3. Turn your phone back on.
