Troubleshoot extending the battery life on your Palm Pre

Last Updated: Sep 25, 2015

There are several things you can do to extend the life of your battery on your Palm® Pre™:

  • Optimize screen settings
  • Turn off other services
  • Check email less often

Optimize screen settings

To save power, use a shorter screen-off interval. By default, the screen turns off after 1 minute of inactivity. If you have increased the time to 2 to 3 minutes, you'll drain your battery faster. Try 30 seconds. To set the screen-off interval, open Screen and in Turn off after, reduce the number of seconds/minutes.

You can also reduce your screen brightness, as higher settings drain the battery faster. The default setting is 40% of the maximum brightness. To reduce the brightness, open Screen and drag the Brightness slider to a lower level.

Turn off other services

Other services running on your Pre will also drain your battery power, such as:

  • Turn off the Wi-Fi feature when you are not using it as your phone uses power searching for a signal even if you are not using the feature or no signal is available. To turn off WiFi, open Wi-Fi and tap Off.
  • Your phone's Bluetooth feature uses a wireless radio that consumes power. You can turn off Bluetooth if you are not using it by opening the Connection menu, tap Bluetooth, and tap Turn off Bluetooth.
  • Location Services provides GPS information to applications and may be on continually. To turn off Location Services, open Location Services and turn Auto Locate off. If an application needs to know your location, a notification will appear asking if the application can identify your location. Tap Allow to turn on Location Services for that session only. The Use GPS service improves the accuracy of GPS applications, but decreases your battery life. For example, when the Google Maps application is in the foreground, it continually tracks your current position and the GPS receiver is using battery power.

Check email less often

To change how often email is checked, open Email > Application menu > tap Preferences & Accounts > tap the EAS account name > tap Get email and set how frequently to synchronize email. You can reduce battery consumption by using an interval such as every 15 minutes or longer on web-based accounts.
