Troubleshoot if you receive a Swype error on your HTC EVO 4G

Last Updated: Jan 11, 2011

You may experience the following issue with your HTC EVO™ 4G.

After updating your EVO to software version 3.70.651.1, when you try to use Swype, the program may crash and show you the error message: The application Swype (process com.swype.android.inputmethod) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. This happens if you previously installed the BETA version of Swype on your EVO and then install the 3.70.651.1 update, which includes the full Swype application.

To resolve this issue, you must uninstall Swype BETA and reboot your phone:

  1. If you see a window telling you that com.swype.android.inputmethod has crashed, press the Force Close button
  2. From your Home screen, press the Menu button
  3. Choose Settings
  4. Go to Applications > Manage Applications
  5. In the downloaded applications list, select Swype
  6. Press the Uninstall button
  7. Press OK to uninstall Swype BETA
  8. Reboot your EVO by holding down the power button and choosing Power off
  9. To finish rebooting, just hold the power button to turn it back on
  10. Once your phone has rebooted, you will be able to use the preloaded version of Swype. Just long-press on any text field, choose Input Method and select Swype. Note: Swype will not be available until AFTER you have rebooted.

Note: At any time, you can check that you have the latest software version for your phone. For instructions on how to check your software version and update your phone software, refer to Check for Updates.
