Troubleshoot issues related to your HTC EVO 3D slowing, freezing or switching off unexpectedly

Last Updated: Jun 11, 2013

This article provides troubleshooting tips for the HTC EVO 3D. It contains troubleshooting steps and advice to help resolve issues that may occur if the device is slowing, freezing or switching off/power cycling unexpectedly.

The symptoms you may experience if you are having this problem include:
  • The device performs slowly
  • The device freezes
  • The device switches off/power cycles unexpectedly
  • The device displays error messages

The following steps and advice can be used to help identify the underlying cause of the issue and resolve it. After completing each step, test to see if the problem still occurs. If so, proceed to the following step.

  1. Perform a soft reset.

This process will delete any temporary files that may be causing the problem. To perform a soft reset, turn the device off and remove the battery. After 30 seconds, reinsert the battery and turn the device back on. If a soft reset did not solve the problem, then move on to the next step.

  2. Clear the respective application cache.

Clearing the application cache will delete any temporary files that may be causing performance issues. Not all applications will allow for the cache to be cleared and, on rare occasions, the application may not function as expected after the application cache is cleared. Note that application cache and application data are different. Clearing application data will remove personal settings and info from the application such as login information, high scores, etc. Clearing application cache will not affect your personal settings or information. To clear the application cache, follow these instructions.

  3. Does the device have low internal memory?
Performance issues can also arise when the device has low internal memory. Verify that the device has sufficient internal memory. For more information on how to troubleshoot low memory issues, including information on how to free up internal memory, follow these instructions.
  4. Are multiple applications running in the background?
Occasionally, when you exit an application, it continues to run in the background. Multiple applications running in the background can cause performance issues. After exiting an application, it is recommended to verify that it has stopped running. If the application is still running, close it. To close an application, follow these instructions.
  5. Is the device running multiple widgets?
Most widgets placed on the home screen or alternate screens are updated frequently. When multiple widgets are constantly updating and gathering information, it can put a strain on the device's operating system and available RAM, which can ultimately lead to performance issues. Removing multiple widgets can help improve performance. To remove a widget, follow these instructions.
  6. Uninstall recently installed third-party applications.
Issues such as freezing and slow performance can occur when an unstable third-party application is downloaded and installed on the device. A third-party application is any application that does not come pre-installed on the device. During the download and installation process, the user must accept various application permissions. These permissions allow the application to control or modify operating system processes which, if any programming flaws exist, can cause performance issues. Did the device issues arise following the installation of a third-party application? If so, uninstall the recent applications and determine if the problem still occurs. To uninstall an application, follow these instructions.

Note: To optimize device performance, ensure the device is running the most recent device software. To check for software updates, follow these instructions.
