Conserve mobile data on your Google Pixel

Last Updated: Oct 18, 2016

Steps to conserve mobile data on your Google Pixel

Follow the steps in each of the sections below to configure your phone to use less mobile data:

  • Manage Data usage

Your phone has an option specifically for managing mobile data usage:

    1. From the home screen, swipe down the Status bar.
    2. Tap the Settings icon.
    3. Tap Data usage. You will see a bar displaying your monthly mobile data usage.
    4. Tap Data saver.
    5. Read the Data saver information. Data saver only restricts cellular data usage by default, so your apps will still function normally when connected to Wi-Fi.
    6. To enable Data saver, tap the switch to On. When finished, or to leave Data saver disabled, tap the Back key.
    7. Note: Some apps may not function correctly when Data saver is enabled. If you experience problems, you may want to leave Data saver disabled.

    8. Tap Cellular data usage. You will see a graph displaying your monthly mobile data usage, and the usage broken down by app.
    9. Tap the Settings icon.
    10. Tap Data warning.
    11. Enter a number below your monthly data limit, then tap SET.
    12. Tap to enable Set data limit.
    13. Review the Limiting data usage prompt and tap OK.
    14. Tap Data limit.
    15. Enter your monthly data limit, then tap SET.
    16. Tap the Back key three times to return to Settings.
  • Wi-Fi

Data usage while connected to a Wi-Fi network doesn't count against your mobile data limit. Be sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network whenever one is available:

    1. From the Settings menu, tap Wi-Fi.
    2. Note: If needed, tap the Wi-Fi switch to On.

    3. Tap the preferred Wi-Fi network.
    4. Enter any required password, then tap CONNECT.
    5. Tap the Back key to return to Settings.
    6. Note: Your phone will remember networks it was previously connected to, and will automatically connect whenever one of those networks is in range.

  • Account synchronization

Your phone automatically syncs account data to and from the internet. Disable any unneeded account synchronization options:

    1. From the Settings menu, scroll to and tap Accounts.
    2. Tap an account type.
    3. If prompted, tap to select an account.
    4. Tap to disable any sync options that you do not need.
    5. Tap the Back key once or twice to return to Accounts.
    6. Repeat as needed for all accounts.
    7. Tap the Home key when finished.
  • Background applications

Applications left running in the background can sometimes use mobile data. It is recommended to periodically check for and close running applications:

    1. Tap the Recent Apps key.
    2. Swipe an app to either side to close it, or tap the Close icon.
    3. Tap the Home key when finished.
