FAQs related to finding a lost or stolen Android device

Answers to some of your questions about using Android Device Manager to find a lost or stolen Android device

  • Is there a way to find a lost or stolen Android device?

Yes. Android devices running Android 4.4 KitKat or newer can use Android Device Manager to help find a lost or stolen device.

Note: Android devices running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or older do not support Android Device Manager and will require the use of third-party applications.

  • What is Android Device Manager?

Android Device Manager is a security feature built into Android 4.4 KitKat devices. A website or an Android app allows a user to:

    • Locate: Uses GPS to show the Android device on a map.
    • Ring: Makes the Android device ring at full volume, even if the phone is silenced. Ring is useful if Locate says the Android device is nearby, but is not easily visible.
    • Lock: Allows a user to lock the device remotely with a new password. Lock also provides a Recovery Message on the lost or stolen device's screen.
    • Erase: Deletes all apps, media, settings, and user data from the device.

Note: These features will work as long as the lost or stolen device is turned on and connected to the Sprint network or a Wi-Fi network.

  • Can I find my device if I haven't turned on Android Device Manager?

Yes. If Android Device Manager was not turned on prior to the loss or theft, both the Android Device Manager website and Android app allow a user to force the Android device to ring. The website and app also allow a user to enable the Lock and Erase functions without the Android device available.

  • Can I use Android Device Manager if I do not have another Android device or computer to help locate my device?

Yes. The Android Device Manager app has a Guest feature. The Guest feature allows a user to log in to the Android Device Manager app on a friend or family member's Android device. The app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and once logged in, Android Device Manager's full functionality is available.

Using the Android Device Manager Guest feature:

    1. From within the Android Device Manager app, tap the account dropdown.
    2. Tap Guest.
    3. Enter the Email and Password for the Google Account associated with the lost or stolen device, then tap Sign in.
    4. Manage the Android device as needed.
    5. When finished, tap Sign Out.
