Troubleshoot issues related to iMessage on your Apple iPad mini with Retina display

Last Updated: Aug 03, 2016

This article helps troubleshoot sending or receiving iMessage.

You may have this issue if your device is unable to:

  • Send or receive iMessages

These steps help identify and resolve the underlying cause. After completing each step, test to see if the issue is fixed. If not, continue to the next step.

  1. Verify your Apple iPad mini with Retina display is connected to the Sprint network using Safari.

Be sure mobile data is enabled and functioning for iMessage to work properly.

    1. From the home screen, tap Safari.
    2. Try to browse to a web page.
    3. If the data connection fails, update the profile.
    4. Test your device to see if the issue is resolved.

If your Apple iPad mini with Retina display still can't connect to data, troubleshoot data connectivity.

  2. Ensure that iMessage is set up correctly.
    1. Verify that iMessage is turned on by tapping Settings > Messages and checking the iMessage status.
    2. Verify that the iPad is connected to data through either a Wi-Fi or Sprint connection, and that a data indicator shows at the top of the display screen.
    3. Verify that the Apple ID for the device is listed under Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
  3. Disable iMessage, reset network settings, and re-enable iMessage.

Apple has acknowledged that there is an issue with iMessage in iOS 7, and promises a fix soon. The best workaround so far is to follow these steps:

    1. Turn iMessage off from Settings > Messages.
    2. Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.
    3. Enter the PIN number
    4. Return to Settings > Messages and turn iMessage back on
  4. Perform a soft reset.

A soft reset reconnects your Apple iPad mini with Retina display to the Sprint network.

    1. From the home screen, press and hold the Power key and the Home key.
    2. Release the Power key and the Home key when the Apple logo appears.
    3. Your Apple iPad mini with Retina display restarts.
    4. Test your device to see if the issue is resolved.

Note: To optimize device performance, be sure your Apple iPad mini with Retina display is running the most recent device software. Check for software updates.
