Troubleshoot issues related to your Apple iPad with Retina Display slowing, freezing or switching off unexpectedly

Last Updated: Aug 03, 2016

This article helps troubleshoot your Apple iPad with Retina display slowing, freezing, locking up, turning off, or power cycling unexpectedly.

You may have performance issues if your device:

  • Performs slowly
  • Freezes
  • Switches off or unexpectedly turns off and back on
  • Displays error messages
  • Is unable to install or update applications

These steps help identify and resolve the underlying cause. After completing each step, test to see if the issue is fixed. If not, continue to the next step.

  1. Perform a soft reset.

A soft reset deletes any temporary files that may be causing the issue.

    1. From the home screen, press and hold the Power key and the Home key.
    2. Release the Power key and the Home key when the Apple logo appears.
    3. Your Apple iPad with Retina display restarts.
    4. Test your device to see if the issue is resolved.
  2. Charge your iPad.

If your iPad is low on battery, it will attempt to extend the battery life by slowing performance down. If an application or background process requires higher performance, it may make the iPad appear freeze or slowdown. Charging your device will provide enough power for the iPad to function normally.

  3. Verify if low storage space is an issue on your Apple iPad with Retina display.

    1. From the home screen, tap Settings.
    2. Scroll to and tap General.
    3. Tap Storage & iCloud Usage.
    4. If your iPad has low memory, troubleshoot low memory issues.
  4. Close applications that may be running in the background.

Some applications continue to run in the background after you exit that application and can cause performance issues. Sprint recommends that you close background applications when you're not using them.

  5. Verify that your iPad is running the most recent software.

There may be a software update that resolves the issue on your iPad.

If you're still having issues, please try the Sprint Community pages or contact Apple Customer Support.
